Visitors to Montacute House Garden widely enjoy this elegant, uncrowded National Trust gem that is best enjoyed in good weather and ideal for walkers, gardeners, and those seeking a relaxed day out.

While indoor access to the house is currently limited due to renovations most reviewers feel the beautifully maintained formal gardens, long walks, and peaceful atmosphere more than make up for it.

About Montacute House Garden

Montacute House Garden is one of the few remaining Elizabethan gardens to still retain its original compartmentalisation.

With plenty to see all year round expect to see the north Garden with Yew Trees.

The East court with walls with Obelisks and lanterns providing protection for the border planting.

The Cedar Lawn is an ideal spot for a picnic, the wibbly wobbly hedge screens the servants path and garden Orchard is a less formal spot.

There is an Orangery with ferns and palms and an ideal spot to stop and read a book.

The wider estate and parkland have waymarked paths, Ladies’ Walk and St. Michael’s Hill Walk, with Lime Trees, Orchards.

And you can walk up to Prospect Tower for great views of the Somerset countryside!

There is a Children’s Play Area with slides, stepping stones and beam.

The house is a 16th Century Elizabethan design. The Ground floor is open, no stair free access and the second floor is currently closed for repairs to the staircase.

As well as the house and Garden there is the Courtyard Café providing hot and cold food and drinks.

There is a second hand Bookshop and Shop selling gifts, local products and plants.
