Beautiful garden oasis steals the show – A National Trust for Scotland Property
Visitors say that the garden is the standout feature of a visit Broughton House.
Despite being part of a town house, it’s surprisingly spacious and thoughtfully laid out, with winding paths, distinct sections and Japanese inspired design elements that give it a calm, almost secluded feel.
Seasonal planting means there’s something to see throughout the year, with spring and summer blooms getting particular praise.
There are also quiet seating areas including spots with views toward the estuary making it a great place to relax, read or take your time exploring.

About Broughton House and Garden
Broughton House and Garden was the home of Edwardian Scottish artist E A Hornel. One of the original Glasgow Boys.
The gardens were designed by Hornel and his sister and has amazing views over Kirkcudbright harbour and the River Dee.
By the way, in case you were wondering how to pronounce Kirkcudbright it’s kuh·koo·bree!
The 2/3rds of an acre plot contains plants rarely seen in Scotland.
Inspired by Japanese gardens with lots of pathways and lawns – make sure you don’t get lost!
And if you need a rest there are benches for you to taake a wee seat on.
Oh, and can you find the The Dalshangan Cross when you are in the garden?
The house is home to some great artworks including Hornel’s but also to the fourth-largest collection of Burns material in the world!
