Monk’s House is the charming 17th Century Sussex cottage where Virginia and Leonard Woolf lived and where Virginia wrote many of her greatest novels from her famous writing lodge overlooking the garden.
Designed by Leonard Woolf, the peaceful garden is divided into a series of garden rooms connected by brick pathways, with colourful borders, sweeping lawns, an Italian Garden, orchard, vegetable patch and stunning views across the South Downs.
Visitors can explore the garden, browse the secondhand bookshop and with required advance booking, enjoy a guided tour of this remarkable literary home.

About Monk’s House
Monk’s House is the 17th-century cottage and former home of Virginia and Leonard Woolf.
The writing lodge has superb garden views and is where Virginia Woolf wrote most of her most famous works.
As she said herself ‘A woman must have money and a room of one’s own if she is to write fiction’!
The garden was designed by Leonard Woolf and has some magnicient views of the Sussex Downs.
The garden was designed with a seriess of rooms linked by a brick pathways, boders and lawsn offering some smashing views.
There is also a formal Italian Garden, Orchard, Terrace Lawn and Vegetable Patch.
There is a second bookshop selling guidebooks, postcards and second hand books!

Pathways are narrow and uneven. Paths are slippery when wet.
