About Stagshaw Garden
Stagshaw Garden is a super National Trust garden on the northern tip of Lake Windermere.
When it says garden its more of pathways through forests with some steep climbs. So not your usual NT garden at all!
Spring and Summer are the best tie to visit when you can expect to see azaleas and rhododendrons.
And at Skelghyll Woods you will find Cumbria’s tallest trees including England’s tallest Grand Fir!
With the quirky Bridge House and the Roman Fort at Ambleside there is much to see as well as the gardens and countryside.
Dora’s Field, originally owned by William Wordsworth, is a smashing spot for a picnic and seeing the many daffodills he planted there.
There is a small dedicated car park for Stagshaw Gardens – only 8 cars though!
Toilets are located at Waterhead car park.

Visitor Reviews of Stagshaw Garden
Google Visitor Review Score 4.4 stars
Don’t take our word for how genuinely super these gardens are. Here is what visitors to Stagshaw Garden had to say:
“Azaleas and Rhododendron in full bloom and quite stunning, but the garden is definitely a forgotten gem.
Nice walk up the steep path above the trees gives stunning views of the fells beyond Ambleside.“
“A really lovely tranquil 8 acre garden which is built into the hillside. There is a bit of walking up and down hills when looking around, so just keep that in mind.”
“We had a lovely walk around the gardens. It is an easy walk down the main road from Ambleside or if you are more adventurous then you can walk behind the mountain rescue base and go via Jenkins Crag.”
