The Workhouse and Infirmary

The Workhouse’s Historic Kitchen Garden!
Located on the eastern side of Southwell, Nottinghamshire, The Workhouse and Infirmary is around a 20-minute walk from the town centre. Built in 1824, this remarkably preserved site includes a recreated Victorian kitchen garden, heritage apple varieties, lavender, rosemary and rhubarb. The garden recreates an important source of food and income for workhouse residents.

My top tip: Try and grab one of the guided tours, and some cake in the Café!

Visitor Information for The Workhouse and Infirmary

The Workhouse and Infirmary is located on the Eastern side of Southwell, about 20 minutes walk from the centre of town.

Built in 1824 the Workhouse is one of the best preserved examples in the country and the Infirmary was built in 1871 for those too ill to work. Early signs of social care in the community.

There are some objects and works of art to see although many are too fragile to be displayed.

The Kitchen Garden is a must see, recreated in 2004 on the same plot as the original vegetable garden which used to provide food for the residents and surplus helped with funding.

Nowadays there are lavender, rosemary, rhubarb and 15 apple trees including Bramley, Domino and Nottingham Pippin. Southwell is the original home of the Bramley apple and there is a festival each year to celebrate it each October.

There is the Infirmary Café for all your refreshment needs and it is located in the Infirmary with indoor and outdoor seating.

They serve hot and cold drinks, pasties, croque monsieurs, ice cream, assume that’s cold, and delicious cakes! There is a dog friendly area. Ace!

If the weather is favourable then there is a picnic area for you to use.

Check out the shop in the reception building and there is also a second hand bookshop as well.

Watch out for events lie the Bramley Apple Day, Wellness Walks, Kitchen Garden Tours and the Floral Pumpkin Decorating days.
